Do Ask! Do Tell!
14 August 2009. Amsterdam. I have just read this upsetting story by Steve Ralls of Immigration Equality, about a US citizen that chooses to uses the pseudonym Mathew (as in Mathew Sheppard). If he were to disclose his own name the result would death for both him and his partner. The American cannot live in his own country because the US government does not recognize his foreign-born partner as his spouse. They live in the Arabic country in which his partner was born. They are able to be together there. They are not able to be together in the US. Yet their lives are in jeopardy. This is the reality of US immigration law. It is cruel. The US government has chosen for decades to send its own citizens into exile rather than do the right thing and allow their foreign-born partners to live with them in the US.
To all our Californian friends: now is the time to call Senator Feinstein to let her know that our families must be recognized in the comprehensive immigration reform that is now imminent.
